From The Desktop of a Plus Size Alternative Girl

A quick guide to BlackMilk Clothing from the perspective of a plus-sized gal.

Disclaimer

At the time of writing this entry, I am not in any way affiliated with BlackMilk Clothing and make no money from sharing my experiences with the brand.
If you aren’t interested in how I got into the brand itself, FEEL FREE TO SKIP AHEAD TO THE SIZE GUIDE UNDER “How do you know what will fit?”.

“What started your collection?”:

I was first introduced to BlackMilk several years before I actually owned any of their pieces. In those days, the ‘Tumblr Aesthetic’ was trendy making galaxy print leggings and dresses extremely popular. Being in my early 20s and at the start of my college journey (prime tumblr user demographic), BM’s galaxy leggings were always on my radar. Sadly, they only sold their products in straight sizes and I was a very plus-size girl. I still checked the site every now and then to see what was new, a sort of sadistic habit of pining after what I couldn’t have.

But my sad little cloud dried up a few years later when I received my first BM item as a gift.
I remember coming home and seeing the tiny, clear bag sitting on the kitchen counter with the bold design showing through. I ran upstairs, already knowing what it was and who it was for, to check with my father. Sure enough, he confirmed that my cousin had brought it over for me as a gift. I flew back downstairs to the bag and my very own MY MELODY MARILAND LONG SLEEVE OVERSIZED BFT in a size XS. Yes. You read that correctly. My cousin gave me, a blouse size 22 at the time, a size XS. And what’s wilder… it fit.

“How do you know what will fit?”

After getting the gift from my cousin, I started looking into the materials and fabrics BM used on their products and I discovered that the dresses and leggings that I had admired for so long were mostly made of Polyester– an incredibly stretchy and comfortable material (if you aren’t allergic to it).

When I go to the BM website, I make sure to read the fabric notes for each item I’m interested in. BlackMilk makes fairly elaborate notes on every clothing item that include the intended fit of the garment, features of the garment, and the fabric it is made out of. They even has a handy list of all their fabrics and how they perform! I also think about the cut and style of each piece before I go ahead and buy it.

“What are your favorite products?”

Thanks to amazing bloggers like Stygiansiryn and Instagram posters like FeelingGrim, I had a very good idea of pieces I would likely have an easy time fitting into.
All photos in the section below are official BlackMilk shop photos of products I own.

Skater Dresses, especially the sleeveless styles are my favorite. They’re a cute cut, comfortable, and they’re snug enough for even me to go braless. There are other styles of skater at BM- like the “Evil tee” style which is made from their stretchy tee material.

Leggings. Leggings. Leggings. I love BM leggings because they are made out of nice, sturdy material that doesn’t go sheer when stretched over my chunky legs.

Tee Shirts! If you couldn’t tell, I get excited when I discover things can fit over my gargantu-chest. Double excited if those things are cute or have prints of things I love.

Sporty Tights– and all the related versions. If you’ve been on their site or Instagram, you’ve seen those iconic faux thigh high tights with fishnet panels they make. What if I told you they make them in tons of colors throughout the year and even have different shapes in the panels like hearts or alien heads? I adore these tights.

.

Now for the million dollar question…

“What size do you wear?”

I’m gonna keep this part brief because there a lot of different situations that dictate what size I choose for BM garments. As of today (1/26/2022): my bust is 55 inches, my waist is about 47 inches, and my hips/widest part of my tummy are about 57 inches. I am also only 5’3.
– For all REGULAR length skater dresses/evil tee dresses, I wear XL or XXL and I can wear these braless (the regular skaters anyway)
– For all LONG TORSO length skater dresses/evil tee dresses (these are alternate versions of some dresses that offer longer torso space for taller wearers), I try to stick with XL because the XXLs in the LT styles are actually a little too big. Yes indeed, you read that right!!! Being short, so too much room length and widthwise makes the dresses too slack and I’m not able to go braless in them during the warmer months.
– For leggings, I can fit into the XLs but I only buy XXLs now because they feel more comfortable and don’t get distorted when they stretch on me!
– For Tees, I wear XL/XXL for the unisex pieces and XXL for the cropped and tighter fitting tees!
– For Tights, I wear ONE SIZE FITS MOST because they stretch for days! They don’t even go sheer on me.

This blog post will be updated periodically as my experiences grow or change. I hope that my notes have helped you!
